FAQs
Is Barcelona good for coffee?
Barcelona is really up and coming when it comes to its coffee scene. While it hasn’t always been the case, the city’s flourishing coffee culture combines traditional Spanish café charm with a new wave of specialty coffee expertise.
With a booming number of third-wave coffee shops and local roasters, Barcelona offers an impressive variety of coffee experiences. Whether you’re in the mood for a classic espresso, a creative latte, or a simple, perfectly brewed filter coffee, Barcelona has a cup waiting for you.
Sure, these newer places are going to be more expensive than the more local spots where you can get a super cheap cortado. But you’re getting what you pay for, so if you’re looking to take things up a notch, it’s almost certainly going to be worth it.
How do you ask for coffee in Barcelona?
If you’re feeling a little lost in translation, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!
Here are a few handy Spanish coffee terms to help you order like a local:
- Café solo: Espresso
- Café doble: Double Espresso
- Café con leche: Coffee with Milk
- Cortado: Espresso with a Dash of Milk
- Americano: Americano, a weaker version of Espresso
- Café con hielo: Iced Coffee
- Descafeinado: Decaffeinated Coffee
With these phrases in your arsenal, you’ll be ordering coffee like a local in no time!
(And yes, they also speak Catalan in Barcelona. However, you’ll be perfectly fine ordering in Spanish in all of these places – and, to be honest, most of the sorts of places on this list should speak enough English for you to order what you’re looking for.)
How much is a coffee in Barcelona?
While the price of a cup of coffee can vary depending on where you go and what you order, generally speaking, you can expect to pay between €1.50 and €3.00 for a coffee in Barcelona. More hipster cafes will, however, charge slightly more.
For instance, for a classic espresso (Café Solo), you’ll typically pay around €1.50. If you fancy a milky café con leche, the price might climb to around €2.00. This is especially the case if you go to any of the thousands of local bars or cafes.
Specialty coffees, like a flat white or a pour-over, might set you back around €3.50 to €4.00, especially at the “fancier” cafes I’ve listed above.
What coffee is Barcelona known for?
