How to ask for something gluten-free in Barcelona?

While many service staff will speak some English in Barcelona, it’s a good idea to have the right phrases on hand to make sure your dietary needs are well understood.

In particular, take note of the following Spanish phrases:

  • “Soy celíaco” – I’m celiac (for men)
  • “Soy celíaca” – I’m celiac (for women)
  • “¿Hay algo sin gluten en el menú?” – Is there anything without gluten on the menu?
  • “¿Esto es sin gluten?” – Is this gluten-free?

You’re not going to find a Catalan speaker in Barcelona who also doesn’t speak Spanish, so having these phrases “only” in Spanish is going to be more than enough.

However, just in case you’re concerned about this, the phrase “gluten-free” in Catalan is “sense gluten”.

Is Barcelona good for celiacs?

Barcelona is an excellent destination for celiacs and those following a gluten-free diet. With a wide array of gluten-free bakeries, tapas bars, and restaurants, the city caters to the needs of gluten-sensitive visitors without compromising on taste or variety.

Many establishments offer dedicated gluten-free menus, while others provide clearly marked gluten-free options, making it easy to dine out without worrying about cross-contamination or hidden gluten.

In addition to the wealth of dining options, Barcelona is home to numerous health food stores and supermarkets that carry gluten-free products, making it convenient for celiacs to find suitable ingredients for cooking at home or enjoying a gluten-free snack on the go.

Are tapas in Spain gluten-free?

While traditional Spanish tapas can contain gluten, there are plenty of gluten-free tapas options available in Spain, particularly in cities like Barcelona that cater to gluten-sensitive diners.

Even plenty of the traditional Spanish tapas options are gluten-free, so you don’t necessarily need to go to any specific places to enjoy these.

At the same time, I wouldn’t necessarily expect a random bar owner to fully understand any gluten requirements. As such, if you truly need your meals to not have come into contact with any other food that does contain gluten, I’d suggest going to an establishment that specifically caters for gluten-free diners, as they’re much more likely to be aware of the need to avoid any cross-contamination.

Best gluten-free tapas in Barcelona

Here’s a list of gluten-free tapas options to enjoy while exploring Spain’s vibrant culinary scene:

  1. Patatas bravas: Fried potatoes served with a spicy tomato sauce and garlic aioli.
  2. Gambas al ajillo: Garlic shrimp sautéed in olive oil with chili peppers.
  3. Pimientos de Padrón: Fried Padrón peppers sprinkled with sea salt.
  4. Boquerones en vinagre: Marinated anchovies in vinegar and olive oil.
  5. Tortilla Española: Spanish omelette made with potatoes, onions, and eggs.
  6. Salpicón de mariscos: A refreshing seafood salad with peppers, onions, and tomatoes.
  7. Aceitunas aliñadas: Marinated olives with herbs and spices.
  8. Pulpo a la gallega: Boiled octopus served with paprika, olive oil, and sea salt.
  9. Espárragos a la plancha: Grilled asparagus with garlic and lemon.
  10. Albóndigas de bacalao: Codfish meatballs in a tomato sauce.

Keep in mind that it’s essential to communicate your dietary needs and ask about potential cross-contamination when dining out, as some establishments may not have separate preparation areas or utensils for gluten-free dishes.

Are there gluten-free beers in Barcelona?

Yes, Barcelona offers a selection of gluten-free beers to enjoy alongside your gluten-free tapas or meal. Many bars, restaurants, and supermarkets in the city carry gluten-free beer options, ensuring that celiacs and gluten-sensitive individuals can partake in the vibrant beer culture of Barcelona.

Daura Damm is one of the main gluten-free beers you’ll find in Barcelona. It’s a Spanish lager that’s been crafted to remove gluten, making it suitable for those with gluten sensitivities and is widely available in Barcelona and is a popular choice for a refreshing gluten-free beer.

Estrella Galicia Gluten-Free is another Spanish beer that’s been crafted to remove gluten, this lager offers a crisp and refreshing taste that pairs well with tapas and other Spanish dishes.

You can also find a range of international gluten-free beers in Barcelona, such as Brunehaut Bio Amber Gluten-Free (from Belgium), Glutenberg Blonde (from Canada) and Greens Gluten-Free IPA (from the UK). Not every bar or supermarket will sell these, but they are occasionally available.

The best strategy is to communicate your needs to the staff at bars and restaurants to ensure that they can guide you toward the best gluten-free beer options available. In particular, most craft beer bars in Barcelona have gluten-free options available these days – and who knows, you might just find your new favorite!
