If you’re planning a trip to Valencia, Spain, you’ll be happy to know that the city has an excellent public transport system, including a metro network that’s efficient, affordable, and easy to navigate. 

The Valencia Metro, operated by Metrovalencia, covers a large portion of the city, with nine lines and over 150 stations. Whether you’re a tourist or a local, the metro is definitely one of the more convenient ways to get around Valencia.

That’s why, in this article, I’ll give you the ins and outs of how the Valencia metro system works. From how to save money on tickets (like with the Valencia Tourist Card, which gives you free, unlimited travel on all public transport in the city) to how to get around, I’ve got you covered!

Valencia Metro System

The Valencia Metro is a fast, efficient, and affordable way to get around the city. With ten lines (six for the metro and four for the tram) and almost 150 stations, it covers a large portion of the city and is easy to navigate. 

The metro system is operated by Metrovalencia, which also runs the city’s tram and bus services. The metro runs from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm on weekdays, with extended hours until 1:30 am on Fridays, Saturdays, and the eve of public holidays. 

Trains run every 5-10 minutes during peak hours and every 10-20 minutes during off-peak hours. The metro is clean, safe, and air-conditioned, making it a comfortable option for getting around Valencia.

Lines and Stations

Each line is represented by a different color. For example, line 1 (red) runs from the airport to the port, passing through the city center. Line 2 (purple) runs from the north to the south of the city, passing through the university area, while line 3 (green) runs from the west to the east of the city, passing through the city center. 

Line 4 (orange) connects the city center with the beach area and line 5 (maroon) runs from the port to the suburbs. Finally, line 9 (light green) connects the city with the neighboring towns of Alboraya and Rafelbunyol. 

As mentioned, the metro has almost 150 stations, with many of them located near major tourist attractions and shopping areas. Some of the most popular Valencia train stations for visitors that you’ll likely go through at some point include Xàtiva, Colón, and Àngel Guimerà, which are located in the city center.

You can also use the app to plan your route, buy tickets, and check the balance on your metro card. The app is available for free on both iOS and Android devices.

Ticket Options

When it comes to using the Valencia Metro, there are a variety of ticket options available to you. 

You can purchase a single ticket, which allows for one trip on the metro. Alternatively, you can buy a return ticket, which is valid for two trips within a 24-hour period. 

If you plan on using the metro frequently, you may want to consider purchasing a travel card, which can be recharged with multiple trips.

Ticket Prices

The price of your Valencia Metro ticket will depend on which zone of the metro you are traveling to. There are four different zones, and the price will vary depending on the number of zones you travel through. 

As of the time of writing this, a single ticket for one zone (which is what most tourists to the city will stick to for getting around the main sights) costs €1.50, while a ticket for all four zones costs €4.00. Children under the age of 10 can ride the metro for free.

Where do I buy a ticket for the metro in Valencia?

The easiest way to get a ticket is to buy it at a metro station. You can purchase tickets from automated machines or from a clerk at a stand. The machines have instructions in multiple languages, including English, so you should be able to figure out how to use them even if you don’t speak Spanish. 

If you’re having trouble, don’t hesitate to ask for help from the station staff.

Another option is to buy a Valencia Tourist Card, which includes unlimited travel on the metro as well as other forms of public transportation. The card also gives you discounts on entry tickets to many of Valencia’s main attractions. 

You can purchase the card online or from any Tourist Info point, which are located throughout the city.

How do I get the metro at Valencia airport?

There’s a metro station located right at Valencia airport. The station is situated on the ground floor of the regional flights terminal, and is easily accessible from both terminals. Once you arrive at the airport, simply follow the signs to the metro station.

At the metro station, you can purchase your tickets from one of the automated machines or from one of the attendants working at the station. Be aware that some machines only accept cards, so if you’re unsure which machine to use, ask one of the attendants for assistance. 

You can also purchase a Valencia Tourist Card, which includes unlimited travel on the metro, as well as discounts on attractions and restaurants throughout the city.

The airport is located on lines 3 and 5 of the metro, which run from the airport to the city center, as well as to other parts of the metropolitan area. Trains run every 10-20 minutes, depending on the time of day, and the journey from the airport to the city center takes approximately 25 minutes.

How much is the metro from Valencia airport to the city center?

If you’re looking for an affordable and convenient way to get from Valencia airport to the city center, the metro is your best bet. The cost of a single ticket from the airport to the city center is €3.90, and the journey takes around 25 minutes. 

When compared to the cost of a taxi, it’s clear that this is very affordable, especially if you’re traveling alone or as a couple. Remember as well that the metro from the station is free if you have a Valencia Tourist Card.

The metro is also very fast and efficient, so you won’t be at a time disadvantage for taking it from the airport. Even if you have to change to get to your accommodation, it’s very straightforward, with transfers being easy and well-marked.

How much is a 3 day metro ticket in Valencia?

The cost of a 3-day metro ticket in Valencia depends on the number of zones you want to travel in. For example, if you’re only planning on staying within Zone A, which covers the city center and immediate surroundings, the cost is €7.20. 

If you want to travel to zones B and C as well, the cost increases to €13.50.

Keep in mind that the 3-day metro ticket is only valid for consecutive days so cannot be used on non-consecutive days. Also, it’s important to note that the ticket is non-transferable, so you can’t share it with someone else.

Why is Metro Valencia free on some days?

If you’re planning to visit Valencia, you might be surprised to find out that the Metro Valencia is free on some days. This is part of the Generalitat’s initiative to encourage the use of public transport and reduce traffic congestion in the city. The free days are usually on weekends, holidays, and special occasions.

This is a great opportunity for tourists and locals alike to explore the city without having to worry about transportation costs. It’s also a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and contribute to the city’s sustainability efforts.

In addition to the free days, there are also other discounts and promotions available on the Metro Valencia. For instance, children under 10 may travel free of charge while accompanied by an adult with a valid transport ticket. 

A maximum of 2 children may travel per each adult and inspectors may request documents to prove children’s age. There are also discounts available for seniors, students, and people with disabilities.

Does the Valencia Metro Run All Night?

The Valencia metro doesn’t run all night, but it does run later on Fridays, Saturdays, and the nights before public holidays. During these nights, the metro runs until around 2:30 am. However, during the rest of the week, the metro stops running at around 11:30 pm.

If you plan on staying out late and using the metro to get back to your accommodation, it’s important to check the timetable beforehand. You can find the timetable on the official Valencia Metro website or at any metro station. 

Alternatively, you can use the Metrovalencia app, which provides real-time information on train schedules and delays.

Keep in mind that the frequency of trains may be reduced during the late-night hours, so you may need to wait longer for a train than during peak hours. 

Can I use the metro card on buses in Valencia?

Yes, you can use the same metro card on buses in Valencia. However, it’s important to note that you need to activate your card when boarding the bus. You can purchase the bus pass at tobacconists, kiosks, and EMT customer service offices. 

Each trip is valid for one hour and allows unlimited transfers between EMT buses.

While the Valencia metro is an excellent way to get around the city, the bus system is equally convenient and efficient. Buses run frequently and cover a wider range of destinations than the metro. 

So, if you’re planning to explore Valencia, I absolutely recommend taking advantage of both the metro and bus systems.
